PATAGONIA
I went on a 3 and a half week bicycle trip on the Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway in Patagonia, Chile in January of 2019. It was the trip of a lifetime. I am working on a mosaic series based on the experience, and here four in the series. Patagonia Impressions, 2019 (27"w x34" h) is my tribute to the experience. I chose to design this in a semi abstract direction as I wanted to include the 2 condors at the top, the route we took - the stones that wind through the mosaic, the rough borders of Chile and Argentina - the little bit we saw of Argentina was all golden and yellow - and of course the bicycle wheel, which can also be interpreted as a compass. This piece is very textural, and this texture extends to the borders, which are a nod to the rough road, omnipresent in our experience. Waters of Patagonia (40"w x30" h) is an interpretation of the abundant water resource in this region. Glaciers, rivers, lakes, streams, waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, rainclouds are some of the forms we were constantly in contact with. Cave World (13"w x13" h) is a mosaic based on the other worldly marble caves on Lago Carerra General near the town of Puerto Rio Tranquilo. Patagonia,The Journey (18"w x18" h) is a mosaic that simply captures the colors and textures I vividly recall.
