PAPER QUILT MOSAIC
Project 'PAPER QUILT' came about when I was invited to participate in a show called 'Trans-Position, An Ancient Medium in a Contemporary World' in Seattle, WA in 2013. I chose to portray the concept of transposition by looking at how artists transpose from medium to medium, and the starting point was: 1) an image from the book, Quilts of Illusion, by Laura Fisher. (Full of wonderful quilts created in the 1800's). 2) is the mosaic interpretation - I love the way broken pottery suggests quilt fabric. I also included some pieces of handmade doilies under clear glass.
Taking the theme further, I decided to transpose the mosaic into a print. With a brayer I inked the mosaic and similar to making a woodblock print, pressed paper onto the inked surface. The effect was interesting but not quite interesting enough, and my next idea was to use the printing process to take the medium back to mosaic by making a paper quilt with printed tesserae. For this I made 3) a new mosaic template. 4) is a sample print which I then cut up into 1000's of triangles, 5). 6) - 7) depicts the process step by step, 8)-9) detail images and 10) the paper quilt at InScape Arts Building, Seattle, WA. Final dimension, 105" x 75". This was a HUGE undertaking involving numerous time-consuming steps, and I am very happy with the way it turned out.
