GUATEMALA COMMUNITY MOSAIC PROJECTS
I have now done 10 Guatemala community mosaic projects. I LOVE this country and have made some very dear friends here. Re-designing my website I intended to condense all of the trips to one page but decided to leave it all up, hopefully someone may be inspired to pursue a similar dream...
I will be returning to San Lucas Toliman in January and February of 2025 for more information on Guatemala Community mosaic projects, email me, cindy@bigbangmosaics.com

1. 'La Camioneta' translates to 'the chicken bus' and is located on a wall of the city zoo in Quetzaltenango and made in 2013. My first trip is well documented with a slide gallery show on this page.
2. 'Nuestra Xelaju' or "Our Xela forever" is on a wall of the University of San Carlos, made in 2014. The project this year was largely orchestrated by Eunice Lopez Ruiz and her husband Alejandro Anleu, a local stained glass artisan.
3. 'Quetzal Family' on a wall of the Zoo in Quetzaltenango created in 2015. Another great turnout of volunteers to work on several walls outside the zoo. I worked on the designs by local artists and then focused on this wall.
4. 'El Lago' San Lucas Toliman, March, 2016. I was thrilled to return to Guatemala, this time to a village on the shores of beautiful Lake Atiltlan. We created 2 murals in the direct method working in the blazing sun.
5. 'El Lago Espectacular'
...English translation, 'The Spectacular Lake', San Lucas Toliman, October, 2016. My first and only time I have visited Guatemala in the fall. This time it wasn't a formal community project as I designed and created this mosaic (with some much appreciated volunteer help) as a donation to Hotel Toliman.

Tolimoto is a made-up word - 'Toli' from Toliman, name of the volcano which rises majestically above the town, and 'moto' from motorcycle. When we made this mosaic in 2019, I never saw a woman on a moped like what is depicted here. In 2022, I lost track of how many there were!

7. 'La gente de San Lucas Toliman'
The people of San Lucas Toliman were the focus of the mosaics we created in 2020, just before the world closed down due to Covid Pandemic.
