ANIMAL WORSHIP
Animal Worship "CAVE PAINTINGS…give us this tantalizing glimpse of a psychological and cultural shift from one of closeness to, and reverence for the rest of the living world towards one of domination.” Melanie Challenger, author of the book, How to Be Animal: A New History of What It Means to Be Human.
The Animal cave paintings I chose to depict in this mosaic are decidedly from the period we were still in awe of wild animals. Represented are animals from South Africa, Lascaux Cave in France, Australia, Colombia, the American Southwest and Indonesia. Animals as source material for artists and craftspersons clearly goes back a long way and examples are universal. The few shown here are from Iran, 2 different tribes in Peru, India, Mimbres pottery of the American Southwest and Inuit art from Alaska. 2023
