Community Mosaic, NUESTRA XELAJU SIEMPRE
We were back in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala for another community mosaic project in April of 2014. This time much advance work had been done by Eunice Lopez Ruiz, one of last year's volunteers and the city's sole mosaic artist, and her husband Alejandro Anleu. When we arrived the sketches were ready, boxes and boxes of tiles donated, and T-shirts designed for all participants. The theme this year is 'celebrating the city' using one of the earlier names for the city, Xelajú, and still used today in the abbreviated form 'Xela'. "NUESTRA XELAJU SIEMPRE", which I like to interpret loosely as "Our Xela, Now and Forever" is a mosaic mural that measures 3 meters high by 12 meters in length, or 9' x 36'. It was a marvelous project from start to finish.
