PATIO and POOLSIDE MOSAICS
'Patio and Poolside Mosaics' is a newer page on my website, introduced as I wanted to have lots of details of one of my favorite commissions EVER, a patio mosaic in Arlington, Virginia. I had dream-come true clients for whom a rough preliminary sketch was sufficient; the mosaic was then able to evolve instead of following a predetermined more narrow direction. This approach results in far more creativity and keeps the process spontaneous and alive. Pool coping with Great Blue Heron nature scene. It was a challenge to squeeze in the Great Blue in such a small vertical dimension.
What a fabulous job this was, installed in September of 2014. My starting point with the design was images of the clients' art collection: lots of color, curves and imagery from nature.

These are all MOTHS not butterflies! All species are endemic to northern Virginia. The rocks are exotics - collected by the homeowner in Montana.
The nest is constructed of broken pottery pieces from a bowl made by the mother of the homeowner; the rocks/EGGS are from her collection.

I made another mosaic for the client above. Here it is - the full window well stitched together to appear as one view, though one never perceives it this way.
