When
Sanderson Academy, a local elementary school was constructed in 1995
1997, the builders left 25 16" X 16" spaces in the cement block
walls of the entryway.
After
the original plan for these spaces never materialized, I proposed that they
be filled with mosaics done by the students. The principal responded enthusiastically
and after many MANY hours of preparation, the project began. A school assembly
was held to present the project to the students and discuss the theme of
our rural lifestyle. The whole student body was invited to submit drawings
based on this theme (one submission portrayed aliens!),and many beautiful
pictures were handed in. Twenty-five were chosen to become mosaics.
After
the mosaic glass arrived we jumped right into the next phase of the project.
The mosaics were layed in the indirect method (see MODUS OPERANDI).Every
student had at least two chances to lay mosaic tiles during art class.
Many
gave up recess time to continue laying their mosaic panels. I worked with
2-4 students at a time. Kids in grades K-2 only placed the tiles while older
students were thrilled to use the nippers as well, providing they wore safety
goggles and gloves.
EVERYONE really enjoyed this part. Once all the mosaics were together, they
were attached to 'Backerboard' by the Art Club.
From
this point on the project was accomplished by parent volunteers. The mosaics
were grouted and cleaned;
meanwhile the cinderblocks had to have the paint removed.
Finally the panels were installed into the walls. The entire project took
a month from start to finish.
