NEW PERSONAL WORK

The NEW PERSONAL WORK section features subject matter of my own choosing. More complex and challenging to create, this is where I try and push the limits of the mosaic art form. While nature is the starting point, my intention is to go beyond the representational and evoke a sense of movement and atmosphere. I have to fit these efforts around my commissions, school projects, and public art mosaics, so I don't have as much time to devote as I'd like, but I always have ideas to pursue and am eager to return to this, my FAVORITE type of mosaic work.

Title End of Summer

Info

Once again, this scene came about while on a bike ride. I often get ideas while out riding or walking, then think, think, think about them and what I want to portray. I experimented with grout lines, different ways of laying tile shapes - in particular the idea of stacking tiles vertically but having color more horizontal (this is what is going on with the green midsection.) I also got the sky to be more chaotic and tempestuous by switching out tiles here and there so the lines didn't run 'straight'. And finally, the handling of the goldenrod was inspired by a student of mine's mosaic.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic, , mirror on cement backerboard,
Size 24"w x 36" h (framed size)
Price $2200

Title 7 Warbler Redux

Info

I did a straightforward '7 Warblers' a few years back of 7 different warbler species realistically portrayed. This piece is much more experimental, playing with the bird environment, elements of bird life and bird silhouettes.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic, , mirror on cement backerboard
Size 36"w x 19" h (framed size)
Price $1800

Title Spawning Salmon

Info

My intention before starting this mosaic was to do another underwater scene from a different perspective and to do it wihout any blue. While searching for imagery, I came upon a photograph of spawning salmon that I kept returning to. To sum up, I changed course and this is the result. It is my favorite work to date. Also, there are mirror bits throughout that do not appear in photos, but lend another element of motion to the work.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic, , mirror on cement backerboard,
Size 54"w x 40" h (framed size)
Price $6500

Title Goldfinches and Thistle

Info

Male and female goldfinches.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic on cement backerboard, cherry frame
Size 28"w x 14" h (framed size)
Price $1100

Title Swimming Turtles

Info

When I do my personal work ( that is, NOT a commission), I like to experiment with getting away from strict representational imagery. I still am drawn to depicting the natural world, but doing so in a way that takes advantage of the medium, and evokes a more emotional response.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic on cement backerboard, handmade cherry frame (frame not shown)
Size 40""w x 30" h
Price $2500

Title Owl

Info

I got ideas for portions of this mosaic while x-c skiing this past winter. I kept hoping I'd be lucky and see a Barred Owl, the most common owl in our vicinity here in western Massachusetts.

Materials vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic, gold smalti, mirror on cement backerboard, handmade cherry frame (frame not shown)
Size 24"w x 38" h
Price $2000

Title Migration II

Info

This is a re-do of the migration piece I did in 2003. I changed some things and am pleased with the effect of light and dark in this version. If I ever did a THIRD take, I'd make further changes as well!

Materials vitreous glass, silver and gold smalti, mirror on backerboard
Size 36" x 36"
Price commissioned piece, New York, NY
