The QUILT project I was prompted to make this full size paper quilt (105"w x 75"h) as part of the Trans-Position show in Seattle, WA in the Spring of 2013. I had created the 'Kaleidoscope Quilt' out of mosaic materials and then wanted to push the idea of mediums transposing and liked the idea of starting with an image of a fabric quilt, transposing it to mosaic, then transposing the image via the medium of printmaking back to mosaic albeit in the medium of paper. This was a HUGE undertaking involving numerous time-consuming steps, from making a mosaic template for printing (LEFT, below), to making many different colored prints. To the right is a print off the template with painted in grout joints. The next image shows the cut up triangles that make up the quilt pattern. One of the protracted steps was painting the grout joints - there was too much white in the overall effect, this was solved by using the printing ink and handpainting the grout joints. The quilt consists of something in the order of 2000 of these triangles! |
These next images depict stages along the way:
Here are 2 close-up images, the first gives a better idea of the colors (my apologies for less than stellar imagery);the second shows the white border - all still triangle quilt sections. I really love the way this area looks like fabric.
And last but not least, here is the image from Laura Fisher's book 'Quilts of Illusion' from which I based my quilt:
